Final phase of bus station improvements underway

funded by uk government

Work is underway on the final stage in the partnership scheme to improve the bus station and taxi rank in Matlock's Bakewell Road.

Your District Council is in the process of completing improvement works to the bus station by installing large windows, new lighting and new seating to create a comfortable waiting area for bus and taxi passengers.

The project also includes the reinstatement of yorkstone paving on the Bakewell Road frontage along with three new seats.

Part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Bus Service Improvement Plan, the project also includes contributions from the District and County Councils.

To facilitate the latest phase of improvements, from next Monday, 18 November, until Friday 20 December, arrangements are being made for taxis to use the neighbouring Spa Villas car park as a temporary taxi rank, which will be reserved for taxi use.

This is due to the need to accommodate buses on the access road and maintain HGV deliveries to neighbouring stores. Signage will be provided to advise customers of the temporary relocation of the rank.

Bus services will continue from the bus station with temporary arrangements in place during the improvements. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while these essential works take place.

Earlier this year the District Council’s contractors completed a deep clean of the bus station building, installed new timber railway sleepers forming a new landscaped area comprising new trees and golden gravel west of the bus station exit and in front of Spa Villas car park, where new cycle parking has also been provided.

During the summer the County Council extended the bus layby in front of M&S, making space for buses to pull up in-line with the new kerbline. This has improved accessibility for those boarding buses and removed the problem where an additional bus was unable to pull in fully, obstructing traffic.

There were also changes to the bus station exit onto Bakewell Road and resurfacing of the footway down to the pedestrian crossing outside Holland and Barratt.

Following our works, the County Council also have plans to install Real Time Information screens for bus users at a future date.
