Somersal Herbert Conservation Area is a small village set within a much wider landscape setting.
Towards the northern boundary lies Somersal Farm and Hill Farm. To the east is Highfield House and the Methodist Church. To the south are Grove Cottage and Marjorie Cottage on Grove Lane and to the west the boundary follows the River Dove
The original designation of Somersal Herbert Conservation Area was in December 1979. It currently comprises 91.5 hectares.
A comprehensive Conservation Area Character Appraisal was approved in August 2012 (see below).
Historic Assets
Within Somersal Herbert Conservation Area there are 35 buildings, of which 12 are listed entries. Somersal Hall is listed Grade I and Montgomery House is listed Grade II*. The remainder are all Grade II. The listed entries in Somersal Herbert Conservation Area range from the decorative timber framed Hall to gate piers and walls; from the village Church to outlying farms. All are recognised for the contribution they make both individually and visually within the street-scene.
Somersal Herbert Conservation Area contains one Scheduled Monument – the Standing Cross in the Churchyard of St. Peters Church.
Somersal Herbert Conservation Area Character Appraisal
Somersal Herbert Conservation Area was designated in 1979 and there had been no review, or amendments to the boundary since that date.In 2012 a comprehensive review was undertaken and a Draft Conservation Area Appraisal was produced. A six-week public consultation exercise followed, including a public advisory meeting. The Appraisal document considered the special qualities and interest of the Conservation Area, such as its origins, its archaeological significance, the architectural and historic quality of the buildings, the relationship of buildings and spaces, the landscape and setting of the conservation area, any negative factors affecting the area and its general condition. The document also included policy and legislative guidance and a review of the boundary, which did not make any recommendations for amendment.In August 2012 Derbyshire Dales District Council approved the Somersal Herbert Conservation Area Character Appraisal without modification. None of the listed buildings within Somersal Herbert Conservation Area are recognised by the District Council as being 'at risk'.
Article 4 Directions
There are no additional planning controls, such as an Article 4 Direction, on properties in Somersal Herbert Conservation Area.
