This week, initial works will be carried out at Shrovetide Walk to lay the groundwork for significant improvements planned through Ashbourne Reborn. The programme will see the transformation of public spaces across the town centre, including this area that links Shawcroft car park and Dig Street, which hosts Ashbourne’s weekly Thursday Market.
When the main works get under way, Shrovetide Walk will be developed into a welcoming space with an enhanced garden area with seating where commemorative artworks will celebrate the unique contribution to the Ashbourne community of the annual Royal Shrovetide Football.
The interim works in November will remove and pave the grassed area around the current inspection hatch, as well as levelling a section of the raised planter and replacing it with topsoil. The initial changes will remain in place until the full redevelopment work is carried out.
The Thursday Market will go ahead as usual on 21 November.
The transformation of Shrovetide Walk is part of the Highways and Public Realm project led by the County Council. The original scheme was initiated and developed by AshCom, a not-for-profit volunteer-led organisation who have contributed vital match funding through local fundraising and sponsorship.
