Fishpond Meadow approved as temporary compound
The District Council has approved the temporary use of part of Fishpond Meadow overspill car park as a site compound for contractors delivering the Ashbourne Reborn town centre regeneration scheme.
On 22 July the council’s Community and Environment Committee agreed to the temporary use of part of Fishpond Meadow for contractors delivering the Highways and Public Realm project within the Ashbourne Reborn transformation programme (subject to a permit from the Environment Agency). A number of potential sites were considered and a final shortlist of Fishpond Meadow car park and the Bus Station car park off King Edward Street was identified, both on land owned by the District Council. After consultation with Ward Members, the Ashbourne Reborn Highways and Public Realm Project Control Board and Chair of the Ashbourne Reborn Programme Board, Fishpond Meadow was recommended as the preferred option.
The Fishpond Meadow site has a grass grid surface to allow temporary overspill parking, although it has not been actively used for this purpose in recent years. The contractor proposes to install a layer of geotextile membrane and a 350mm layer of stone so that it can be used as a compound for plant, equipment, materials and welfare cabins. At the end of the scheme, the site would be returned to the District Council in its current condition for future use as overspill car parking.
Ashbourne Shrovetide Committee lease the adjacent fishpond for use by Dove Valley Angling club, and the committee’s decision also accepted a recommendation to include an additional area in the lease for their use as car parking.
