Local Projects Fund helps sensory garden

Our Local Projects Fund has helped the local First Taste charity develop an interactive "sensory" garden in the grounds of Darley Dale's Longmeadow Care Home.

Officially opened on Friday 8 July by the charity's patron, Baroness Estelle Morris, the garden was created thanks to an inter-generational link between residents at the care home and students from the local Darley Dale County Primary School. The District Council's Local Projects Fund contributed £300 towards the overall cost of the initiative.

First Taste's trustee and voluntary secretary Iris Wagstaffe said:

"Bringing young people and frail older people from a care home together develops understandings between the two. Care homes are often seen as separate from the rest of a local community, and older people, especially those with dementia, are frequently forgotten and excluded from usual community activities.

"As well as providing a stimulative garden resource for the residents, this project has enabled ongoing and sustainable links between the home and the school, promoting better awareness in the wider community of the needs of frail older people."
