Cheering on our elite athletes!

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Caroline Povey is among 16 talented sports stars from across the Derbyshire Dales who have shared £2,750 in funding support, thanks to Derbyshire Sport's business network ICON.

They can use their bursary to help meet travel, equipment, coaching or competition costs and received their cheques at a celebration event at our Arc Leisure Matlock. Each was also handed a leisure pass by your District Council, which will further help with their training.

All of the athletes are tipped for further success in their respective sports and have either been selected to compete for Great Britain or a home nation, have won a national championship medal, are part of a recognised national development squad or club academy structure or are a member of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS).

Icon athletes receiving their bursaries at our Arc Leisure MatlockOthers to receive ICON backing include skiers Elektra Brown and Isobel Brown (both Ashbourne) and Ben Burley (Hathersage, pictured below), ice skaters Clare Whalley and Tom Whalley (both Baslow), wrestlers Lewis Brown (Middleton) and Shaun Thorpe (Wirksworth) and tug of war competitors Alex Birch (Baslow) and Alec Neville (Tansley).

Also supported are tennis player Victoria Allen (Ashbourne), triathlete Tasmin Boam (Hackney), roller sports competitor Finnbarr Brooks (Ashbourne), sailor George Coles (Stanton in the Peak), cyclist Arthur Green (Tansley) and archer Eva Henderson-Hirst (Flagg).

Hayley Lever, Director of Derbyshire Sport, James Slack, Sports Development Lead at Arc Leisure, Matlock and Cllr Richard Bright, Service Area Champion (Community Development) for Derbyshire Dales District Council, met athletes to hand over their bursaries and leisure passes.

Cllr Albert Catt, Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales, said:

"We're delighted to once again be backing ICON – and that so many athletes from our district are benefiting. The District Council is proud to be giving dedicated local athletes a deserved helping hand in their bid to achieve at the highest level."

Derbyshire Dales District Council is among 10 local authorities across the county who are members of business network ICON, which was set up by Derbyshire Sport as part of the work to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympics in Derbyshire.

It is also backed by a number of businesses in the private sector, who contribute an annual membership fee, and this money goes directly to athletes through the bursary scheme.
