A £60,000 upgrade of the fitness suite at our Ashbourne Leisure Centre is to be unveiled on schedule.
From this coming Monday, 1 December, existing and new members will be able to use the new facility - an extension of the centre's former fitness suite, featuring new equipment – followed by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday 5 December.
The District Council successfully won the upgrade funding from Derbyshire County Council's 'Aiming High Fund' to create an inclusive fitness centre of excellence, giving better access, equipment and environment for people with varying disabilities.
A condition of the grant meant the funding had to be spent and the project completed by the end of December this year – and work started on 10 October.
- Re-opening special offer! Pay by Direct Debit (from £19 a month) or take out an Annual Membership (from £190) and get December FREE. The earlier you join, the more you save. See our membership details or visit our leisure centre reception for further information and a tour of the new facility.
It's a welcome boost for the District Council following a blaze at the Ashbourne centre at the end of July. Investigations by experts and insurers means the centre's pool will remain closed until the new year.
The external funding comes on top of a £175,000 Sport England grant that has seen the creation of a new open plan "changing village" for the swimming pool. The new facility was on the verge of being opened to the public when fire broke out.
Despite the pool closure, all "dryside" facilities at the centre - including the main sports hall and squash courts - have remained open. A temporary gym comprising cardiovascular and free weight equipment was made available during the seven-week programme to create the extended fitness suite.
Chairman of the District Council's Community Committee, Councillor Jennifer Bower said:
"The blaze back in July has meant it has been a turbulent few months for Ashbourne Leisure Centre, its staff and all our regular users.
"The good news is that we have fought back and, thanks to external funding, very soon the centre will be fully operational once more with new and improved facilities that will make it better than ever. Anyone wanting a tour of the new fitness suite is most welcome to call our team on 01335 343 712 or email firstname.lastname@example.org."
