A fire at our Ashbourne Leisure Centre late on Saturday night (26 July) closed the pool while a damage investigation took place. Our dry side facilities, including fitness suite, are open as usual.
Various contractors and specialists have now completed their inspections and will be reporting back to the District Council early next week (w/c Monday 4 August) on the likely cost and timescales.
The plant room was affected, including the pool filtration system, meaning the pool is closed until further notice. But the main sports hall, squash courts and fitness suite have been unaffected.
At one stage the blaze - thought to have started outside the building - spread to the roof, but fortunately the centre's new changing village, currently nearing completion, does not seem to have been affected.
Derbyshire police have now confirmed three people have been arrested - a 16 year-old and two 18 year-olds. The teenagers have been released on bail.
Some good news is that early reports in the media about the plant room being completely destroyed by fire are unfounded. Contractors involved in the leisure centre upgrade will be doing an assessment of the plant room damage over the coming days.
We're recommending that anyone who pays for swimming lessons at Ashbourne Leisure Centre by direct debit doesn't cancel. Refunds will of course be available, but it helps centre staff if customers could please wait for a few days until we know exactly how long the pool will remain closed.
